Nature of Event :

3.8 km / 2km / 1km Open Water Swim Race  
Date : 1st July 2021 (Thursday, public holiday)

The McBean Middle Island Challenge is an open water swim race that suits swimmers of all abilities. The event includes three distances: 3.8km, 2km and 1km. We emphasize on a friendly racing atmosphere that is welcoming of all swimmers - from the beginners to the elites in a scenic setting at Deep Water Bay.

Cash prize will be awarded to swimmers who break the 3.8km overall course records.  Souvenirs will be awarded to swimmers who finish within 20% of their respective age group records for the 3.8km race.  

Race schedule: 7:00am-12:30pm

Exact start times will be announced two days before race day due to social distancing regulation.  There will be different wave starts. 

Race venue: Victoria Recreation Club, Deep Water Bay

Quota is limited and will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis.

Fees

3.8km race:

  • Early Bird: $400 (until June 13th) 

  • Standard: $450 (until June 28th, 6pm)  

2.0km race:

  • Early Bird: $350 (until June 13th) 

  • Standard: $400 (until June 28th, 6pm)  

1.0km race:

  • Early Bird: $300 (until June 13th) 

  • Standard: $350 (until June 28th, 6pm)  

Sponsor a Splash swimmer (Optional):

Swimmers can sponsor a Splash swimmer to race at a discounted race entry fee of $250:

  • 15 spots for 1km race 

  • 15 spots for 2km race 

Safety buoys (Optional):

  • $180 (Order online and collect on race day)

  • $250 (Purchase on race day)

Age categories:

  • 1km race: 12yrs & Under, 13-15 yrs, 16-19 yrs, 20-39 yrs,40-49 yrs, 50+ yrs Male and Female

  • 2km race: 15yrs & Under, 16-19 yrs, 20-39 yrs,40-49 yrs, 50+ yrs Male and Female

  • 3.8km race: 15yrs & Under, 16-19 yrs, 20-39 yrs,40-49 yrs, 50+ yrs Male and Female

  • Age groups are determined based on a participant's age on race day

Prize: 

Medals/Prizes will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category in each race distance.

Cash prize will be awarded to swimmers who break the 3.8km overall course records.  Souvenirs will be award to "Elite" swimmers who finish within 20% of their respective age group records. 

Rules and Regulations 

  1. Declaration of responsibility is required for all swimmers.

  2. No one should join the race unless he/she is physically fit, and in excellent health condition.

  3. For the 3.8km race, the cut off time is 1hour 45 minutes. Racers who fail to reach the 1km checkpoint within 30 minutes are required to leave the water at Middle Island Beach and walk back to VRC.

  4. Cut off times for 1km/2km races are 30 mins and 60 mins respectively.

  5. Racers may be asked to provide proof of competence. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

  6. Racers must obey instructions to kayakers, helpers and personnel of the race.

  7. Racers should maintain a distance of at least 30 meters from the shore.  

  8. Racers will take full responsibility and safety during the race.

  9. Wetsuit, fins or paddles are not allowed.

  10. SAFETY BUOYS are mandatory during the ENTIRE race.​ Losing a buoy during the race will result in disqualification.

Transportation to VRC Deep Water Bay:

  • MTR: get off from Ocean Park MTR station, and 15-20mins walk along Mill & Chung Path 

  • Bus : 6X, 260

  • Driving - Public Parking is available at Island Road, Deep Water Bay.
